About CBT
CBT (or Compulsory Basic Training) is a training course which is normally completed in one day. Delivered correctly, a CBT is a fantastic introduction to biking and will give the rider skills to be safe and confident on a motorcycle.
At 16 years old, completion of a CBT course allows the rider to ride up to a 50cc machine. At 17 years old or over, completion of a CBT course allows the rider to ride up to a 125cc machine. Upon completing a CBT course, the rider must display full size L-plates on the front and rear of their motorcycle. They must not carry a pillion passenger or ride on a motorway.
A CBT certificate lasts for two years (at which point it must be renewed) unless the rider obtains a full bike licence in the meantime. If the rider wishes to obtain a full motorcycle licence, they must present a valid CBT certificate at the time of taking their test.
